Description

Oh hello there,

Do all beginner photographers eventually attempt photograph water droplets? It certainly is fun to do and one can learn a lot about setting up a studio space, and about many key photographic aspects in general. I definitely enjoyed doing this. And as the shots started hitting the several hundreds, the few semi-goods ones only inspired me to keep going and to try to improve my technique, and get that one perfect shot of a drop rising out of the surface.
My first attempt at this was indoors, afternoon sun, a few low-power desk lamps, with a white paper backdrop. I do not have shots worth putting up of that trial. However, the following day, with new courage, the 12pm sun was bright, and I set up outside and Hey Presto! Who knew light was so important, cough cough.

Since I am only new to photography ( or at least new to having a dslr), I only have the standard kit. These shots were taken on my Nikon D3100 with an 18-55m kit lens. I am curious what a macro lens would bring to the scenario! Excited to try one day.

Please let me know if you would like to use any of these photos for something ^.^
Feel free to comment and critique!

Hope you enjoy

Ted

The set up:
On a table, outdoors with sun shining from one side.
Dark blue sheet as a backdrop, turned slightly to one side so as to be in shadow.
Clear glass filled almost to the brim with water, standing level on the backdrop
Camera on tripod (off table), the focus set at the very center of the glass - where the drop will be.
Bribed younger brother to stand on table above setup with a jug o water and a straw- slowly dripping water using a the very center of the glass from about 1m height.
Keep taking shots!
While an automated dripping set up would be ideal - I only really thought about that later... So it can always help to do a bit of research before hand!
